Présentation de l'intervention
This paper will examine how factional conflict was shaped and intensified through language. By comparing letters from Philip’s court to Ferdinand, Castilian nobles, ecclesiastics, and the Papal Curia, I will track how political dissent moved from veiled suggestions to direct opposition. In particular, I will examine Philip’s rhetorical evolution in his correspondence with Ferdinand: he begins by presenting himself as a pious and obedient son-in-law, but gradually adopts the tone of a reigning king who asserts his sovereignty, respectfully but firmly signaling that he will not retreat from his position.
