PRÉSENTATION
À l’initiative d’Erkjad Kajo, historien au laboratoire TELEMMe, MMSH (Aix-Marseille Université), et coorganisé avec Alexandros S. Balatsoukas (Center for Transimperial History, université Doshisha), un atelier international d’auteurs se tiendra à Athènes les 24 et 25 septembre 2026. Cette rencontre est organisée en partenariat avec le Laboratoire d’histoire et d’historiographie italiennes de l’Université nationale et capodistrienne d’Athènes, partenaire local et hôte de l’événement.
Réunissant des chercheurs et chercheuses issus d’institutions européennes, nord-américaines et du Moyen-Orient, l’atelier propose de renouveler l’histoire intellectuelle et politique de la Méditerranée au long XIXe siècle. Au cœur de cette démarche collective : envisager l’espace méditerranéen comme un laboratoire d’invention politique, où s’élaborèrent des projets fédéralistes, des formes d’autonomie et des conceptions plurielles de la souveraineté. En croisant les espaces ottoman, balkanique, ibérique, italien et maghrébin, les échanges exploreront la circulation des idées, les réseaux d’exil et les expériences de coexistence au-delà des frontières nationales, impériales et confessionnelles. Une conférence d’Oded Steinberg (Université hébraïque de Jérusalem) et une intervention de Victor Neumann (Université de l’Ouest de Timișoara) enrichiront les discussions.
L’atelier permettra de discuter les contributions, de dégager des problématiques communes et de renforcer la cohérence scientifique de l’ouvrage collectif Alternatives to the Nation-State: Federalism, Autonomy, and Post-Imperial Imaginaries in the Mediterranean Long Nineteenth Century, dirigé par Erkjad Kajo et Alexandros S. Balatsoukas, dont la publication est prévue chez Routledge dans la collection Ideas beyond Borders. Le volume propose une histoire connectée des alternatives à l’État-nation, attentive aux projets politiques souvent relégués au second plan par les historiographies nationales. Nourri par les recherches menées à TELEMMe et par cette collaboration internationale, il entend restituer la diversité des possibles politiques envisagés en Méditerranée au cours du long XIXe siècle, sans réduire leur portée à leur succès ou à leur échec ultérieur.
