In this presentation, I focus on one specific aspect of our ongoing discussion: the role of web archives in providing genuinely useful knowledge for studying a society and its social and cultural realities—drawing on the experience of the WebLab, which we co-created. To illustrate this, I explain an experiment we carried out involving a web archiving tool/platform based on Browsertrix, outlining the context and objectives, how the system works, and finally, some initial reflections and outcomes.
Since the creation of the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) in 2003, the field of web archiving has become increasingly structured. Tools, methods (Brügger, 2018), and research collectives are now well established and have demonstrated their relevance.
The organization of the RESAW conference in Marseille in June 2023 marked a turning point in our collaboration. Jean-Christophe Peyssard and I, after having worked separately on various international projects, we felt that the time had come to reinvest our experience locally, alongside the research collectives based in the Aix-Marseille area.
we went on to create the WebLab—a space for both reflection and hands-on practice dedicated to the study of the web, both live and archived, as well as new media. The WebLab hosts seminar and workshop sessions focused on processing data from the live or archived web, at the intersection of the humanities and information sciences. It also offers training programs, such as this doctoral course ‘The Web as a source or fieldwork’ which has just been completed.
The development of tools like Browsertrix led us to experiment on our own web archiving platform, which we launched in 2024 and whose name is WAAM Web Archiving Aix Marseille.
