Présentation de l'intervention

Although evidence of resistance and opposition to dynastic priorities is rare, it can occasionally be found, particularly in correspondence between family members. I aim to examine various cases of individual resistance to dynastic “pragmatism” within the Avis, Trastámara, Habsburg, and Valois families between 1490 and 1520. Ferdinand of Aragon, for instance, opposed the ordination of his extramarital grandson on the grounds that he should instead serve in Archduke Charles’s court, as he was the future head of their family. Dowager Queen Leonor of Portugal exchanged letters with Margaret of Austria, planning marriages between their families. These senior family members often sought to guide younger ones into accepting matches that aligned with collective interests.
I will also analyze the arguments used to persuade them and explore how notions of dignity and vocation played significant roles in the self-discipline of these junior members.
