Présentation de l'intervention
From the high valleys of the French province of the Dauphiné to the streets of Lyon and Grenoble, this paper will examine the spaces, mechanisms and social actors (men and women) engaged in smuggling between the last decades of the seventeenth century and the French Revolution. It will focus on two specific products, one heavily taxed (salt) and the other prohibited (calicos), both of which were much in demand from consumers in eighteenth-century Europe.
