It focuses on the interaction between Italians circulating around the world, and their relationship with Italy from a political and cultural perspective. Answering the important question of how migration affects Italianness, the authors explore the ways in which migrants retained their Italian culture, customs and practices during and after their travels. Spanning a long period from the Risorgimento up until the 1960s, the book sheds light on the institutions and social structures that contributed to the construction of cultural links between Italian migrants and their country of origin. Not only broad in its temporal scope, the volume covers a wide geographic area, examining the lives of Italian migrants in North America, South America, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Bringing together a wealth of research on Italians, alongside the different migratory routes taken by these men and women, this book provides new insights into Italian culture and seeks to strengthen our understanding of Italian migration history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This book is based on\u00a0a selection of\u00a0some\u00a0papers presented\u00a0at an international conference held in Paris at the National Museum of the History of Immigration and at the Italian Cultural Institute (16\u201317 June\u00a02017) on the occasion of the exhibition \u201cCiao Italia.\u00a0A Century of Italian Migration and Culture in France, 1860\u20131960). This conference has\u00a0been\u00a0benefited from the support of\u00a0different research centers:\u00a0the Centre d\u2019histoire de Sciences Po (Paris), the\u00a0Centre de Recherche en Histoire \u00a0europ\u00e9enne compar\u00e9e (CRHEC)\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 Paris-Est Cr\u00e9teil), the LARHRA (Universit\u00e9 Lumi\u00e8re Lyon 2-\u00a0Universit\u00e9\u00a0Jean Moulin-Lyon 3\u2014Universit\u00e9 Grenoble-Alpes-ENS de Lyon-CNRS), the Mediterrapolis LIA (Aix-Marseille Universit\u00e9-CNRS-\u00c9cole fran\u00e7aise de Rome- Sapienza Universit\u00e0 du Roma- Universit\u00e0 degli Studi Roma Tre)\u00a0and\u00a0TELEMMe (Aix-Marseille Universit\u00e9-CNRS).\u00a0The conference and the book have been funded by\u00a0the\u00a0Institut Universitaire de France.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>St\u00e9phane Mourlane<\/strong> is Associate Professor of Modern History at Aix-Marseille Universit\u00e9 and a researcher at TELEMMe research centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C\u00e9line Regnard<\/strong> is Associate Professor of Modern History at Aix-Marseille Universit\u00e9, researcher at TELEMMe research centre and a former member of the Institut Universitaire de France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manuela Martini<\/strong> is Professor of Modern History at the Universit\u00e9 Lumi\u00e8re Lyon 2, a researcher at the LARhRA research centre and a member of the Institut Universitaire de France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Catherine Brice<\/strong> is Professor of Modern History in the Center for Research in Comparative European History (CRHEC) at the Universit\u00e9 Paris-Est Cr\u00e9teil, and a former member of the Institut Universitaire de France.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This edited collection explores the notion of Italianness &#8211; or Italianit\u00e0 \u2013 through migration history.
