Aujourd\u2019hui les outils pour une lecture d\u00e9passionn\u00e9e des imbrications du fait artistique avec les logiques spatiales ne manquent pas et le dossier peut \u00eatre rouvert. Il faudra d\u2019abord tenter d\u2019\u00e9tablir \u00e0 quel moment et sous quelles conditions la notion de \u00ab M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e \u00bb appara\u00eet dans le discours sur les arts. Puis d\u00e9celer les points d\u2019articulation \u00e0 une modernit\u00e9 qui prend le contrepied de celle, canonique, d\u2019origine essentiellement septentrionale, et qui se caract\u00e9rise par une volont\u00e9 de conciliation avec une tradition recompos\u00e9e.
